Multifocal Sunglasses
by Courtney Dryer, OD, December 15, 2023
Multifocal lenses are advanced technology eyeglass lenses designed to address the vision needs of individuals with presbyopia, an age-related ocular condition that impairs one’s near vision. Presbyopia begins around age 40 and progresses until age 60. Multifocals are specialized sunglasses that incorporate multiple prescriptions into a single lens, seamlessly blending distance, intermediate, and close-up vision correction.
A pair of multifocal sunglasses eliminates the need for the wearer to switch between different pairs of glasses for different activities. Whether reading a book on the beach, hiking in the mountains, or putting bait on a fishing line, multifocal sunglass wearers can enjoy clear vision at various distances without constantly changing their eyewear.

Multifocal Prescription Sunglasses Frames
Multifocal lenses are often called progressive lenses or PALs. Technically, bifocals and trifocals may also be considered multifocal lenses because they are split into more than one power; however, the term multifocal typically refers to a progressive lens. Unlike a traditional bifocal or trifocal lens, a progressive lens eliminates the noticeable segmented lines that separate the areas of different prescription strengths.
The design of a multifocal lens allows for a seamless visual progression from far to intermediate to near. The absence of a visible line improves the aesthetic and gives the wearer a more natural and comfortable visual experience. The wearer will not experience an abrupt drop from distance to near, which occurs with a lined bifocal or trifocal.
No matter the outdoor activity, the wearer can seamlessly transition between different focal distances without the inconvenience of switching between multiple pairs of glasses. This adaptability is ideal for those who lead active lifestyles.
The upper portion of multifocal prescription sunglasses will correct your distance vision, the middle is used for intermediate tasks, and the near prescription is located at the bottom of the lens. Today’s multifocal lenses are customized with the eyeglass wearer’s prescription digitally enhanced across the front and back surfaces for improved adaptation and clarity. The price of the lens is often dependent upon the level of technology.
When you order from Overnight Glasses, you have four choices of multifocal prescription lenses for your sunglasses: Shamir Autograph 3, Seiko Surmont, and the premium and premium+ lenses. The Shamir Autograph 3 lens is the most advanced multifocal lens design and will provide excellent vision at all distances. We recommend the Seiko Surmount lens if you are a new progressive lens wearer for easier adaptation and those with a hyperopic (+) prescription. We suggest the premium and premium+ lenses if you want to move to a more advanced freeform lens. Lined bifocals and trifocals are also available.
The fit of the glasses on your face and the recorded measurements are extremely important to your success with a multifocal lens.
It may take some time to adapt if you have never worn a pair of multifocal sunglasses. New wearers may need up to a few weeks to learn to use their lenses. An existing wearer may also need time to adjust to the location of the powers within the lens, especially if there is a big change in prescription or the lens size differs from the previous pair. However, once the wearer has adapted, they will find the convenience and versatility of multifocal lenses make them the best choice for daily wear.
High-Quality Lenses
High-quality multifocal lenses are available to order for your prescription sunglasses. Depending on your eyeglass prescription, your polarized sunglasses can be ordered with single-vision, lined-bifocal, or progressive lenses. If your multifocal prescription requires thinner, lighter lenses, ordering high-index lenses with your frame selection is recommended. Trivex lenses are lightweight, shatter-proof, and available for low to moderate prescriptions.
Your multifocal prescription sunglasses can be ordered with tinted, mirror, or polarized lenses. Tinted lenses are available in many colors and will change the color of the environment to match the lens tint. Polarized lenses are a great feature for outdoor enthusiasts. They reduce glare from surfaces like water and roads, improving visual comfort and safety. They improve color and contrast and are preferred by skiers, boaters, and golfers. Mirrored lenses are available in many colors and will reflect the world in the lenses.
We guarantee your multifocal sunglasses will be easy to clean, UV-protectant, scratch-resistant, and with a premium anti-glare to reduce glare and reflections.
No matter your prescription, high-quality multifocal lenses are available for your sunglasses. Order multifocal lenses for your sunglasses today!
